這首歌的核心主題是 "The Day the Music Died"（音樂死去的那一天），
指的是 1959年2月3日，三位搖滾樂先驅——
Buddy Holly、Ritchie Valens 和 The Big Bopper——
因飛機失事同時罹難的悲劇。

"The Jester" (弄臣)
普遍認為是指 Bob Dylan (巴布狄倫)。

"Jack Flash" & "Satan"

"Lenin read a book on Marx"
Verse 3 用的是 Lenin (列寧)。這是一個極為精妙的雙關語。
雖然歷史上列寧確實讀馬克思，
但在 60 年代的流行文化語境下，
這絕對是在指涉 John Lennon (約翰藍儂)。
Don McLean 故意混淆這兩個名字，
來諷刺藍儂後期變得越來越像個激進的政治革命家，
而不再只是單純的音樂人。
