Dire Straits（海峽兩岸樂團） 於
1985年所發佈的歌曲〈Money For Nothing〉，
是搖滾樂史上的經典之作，
收錄在他們全球銷量突破
三千萬張的超級專輯《Brothers in Arms》中。
不僅在 Billboard Hot 100 榜單上蟬聯三週冠軍，
更在 1986 年奪下葛萊美獎「最佳搖滾組合」獎項。
這首歌最著名的那段「Les Paul 吉他破音前奏」，
是主唱兼吉他手 Mark Knopfler 刻意模仿 ZZ Top 的音色，
透過壓低瓦數的音箱與半踩的哇哇踏板（Wah-wah pedal），
創造出一種充滿顆粒感、既悶騷又狂野的神級聲響。
這首歌的歌詞創作背後有一個極具色彩的故事：
Mark Knopfler 某次在紐約的一家家電賣場裡，
無意間聽到一位正在搬運冰箱的工人
對著賣場電視牆上的 MTV 頻道大發牢騷。
那位工人看著螢幕上那些打扮得花枝招展、
濃妝豔抹的搖滾巨星，憤恨不平地說：
「這哪叫工作啊？彈彈吉他就能不勞而獲，還有免錢的馬子投懷送抱！」
Knopfler 覺得這段充滿勞工階級偏見與
憤世嫉俗的獨白簡直是天才，
當場就拿筆在紙箱上紀錄下來，
這才有了這首以「藍領工人視角」反諷演藝圈的作品。
值得一提的是，開場那句洗腦的「I want my MTV」，
其實是找來了傳奇歌手 Sting（史汀） 友情獻聲。
這段旋律其實是在向Sting自己的名曲
〈Don't Stand So Close To Me〉致敬。
而在 80 年代，這首歌的音樂錄影帶也因為
首創了3D電腦動畫技術而成為 MTV 頻道的指標，
雖然現在看來畫質有些復古，
但在當年可是劃時代的視覺震撼。
雖然第二段歌詞中出現了
對性少數群體不友善的詞彙（faggot），
在當時引發了不少爭議，
但 Knopfler 多次澄清這是在刻畫角色的偏見，而非樂團立場。

"Money for nothing and your chicks for free"
這句歌詞是整首歌的核心，
直白地表達了藍領階級對演藝人員「看起來很輕鬆」的眼紅（嫉妒）。
在 80 年代，搖滾明星被視為一種不真實的、被過度包裝的存在。
這句詞後來在台灣的語境裡，
就像是老一輩看到年輕人做直播或當網紅，
會說：「那哪叫作工？啊不就話唬爛就有錢拿！」
那種充滿世代與觀念鴻溝的偏見，被 Knopfler 寫活了。
"I want my MTV"
這不僅是背景合音，更是當時 MTV 頻道真實的行銷標語。
當時 MTV 剛起步，需要歌迷打電話給
有線電視供應商強迫他們上架這個頻道。
Sting 在這裡的唱腔非常有靈魂，

這首歌是「第一人稱敘事」，
模仿的是一個粗魯工人的口吻。
這名工人無法理解男人為何要戴耳環、化妝，
這反映了 80 年代美國傳統勞工對
「華麗搖滾（Glam Rock）」與「新浪漫主義（New Romantic）」
興起時的一種男性氣概焦慮（Masculinity Crisis）。
