本曲最早由音樂人 D.L. Byron 於 1980 年編創，
受知名製片人 Jimmy Iovine 委託，
原本打算作為電影《時代廣場》的插曲。
然而當時唱片巨頭 Arista 的主事者 Clive Davis，
判定此作不夠市場化而將其打入冷宮。
隨後該作被轉手給兩位歌者在 1981 年重新詮釋。
其中 Helen Schneider 的演繹在德國大獲成功，
而 Rachel Sweet 則將其改編為帶有薩克斯風獨奏的風格。
這兩位女音皆大幅修改了原曲的段落，

直到 Byron 將此軌音軌引薦給 Chrysalis 唱片，

樂團鼓手 Myron Grombacher 攜手重寫了原本溫和的詞句，
將其轉化為對親密關係中痛苦的真摯審視。
這部作品最終蛻變成一首由破音吉他驅動的硬式搖滾國歌。

Byron 依然牢牢掌握了全數的著作權，
在版稅收入上成了最後的贏家。
