Matchbox Twenty 於 2000 年 9 月 19 日所發佈的歌曲〈If You're Gone〉，
是他們專輯《Mad Season》中傳唱度最高、情感也最細膩的代表作之一。
這首歌在 Billboard Hot 100 榜單上最高衝到了第 5 名，
並在 Adult Top 40 榜單上霸榜多年，
是當之無愧的千禧年成人抒情搖滾經典。
由主唱 Rob Thomas 親自操刀創作，
這首歌的背後其實藏著一個既心酸又浪漫的真實故事。
當年 Rob Thomas 剛結束第一張專輯的瘋狂巡演，
正與他後來的妻子 Marisol Maldonado 談戀愛。
然而，當時的 Marisol 對於「跟一個搖滾巨星交往」感到極度不安，
甚至考慮要結束這段關係，回歸平靜的生活。
Rob 在極大的心理壓力與恐懼下，

註解補記
Breathing room（呼吸空間）：
這是一個極具諷刺意味的隱喻。
通常人們渴望「呼吸空間」是為了自由，
但這裡指的是當對方離開後，
家裡雖然變寬敞了（空間變多），
主角卻因為孤獨與痛苦而感到窒息，反而「動彈不得」。
Empire（帝國）：
Rob Thomas 用這個詞來形容一段原本堅不可摧、
宏大且充滿理想的戀愛關係。
這反映了他在 2000 年代初期
如日中天的事業與當時對愛情的遠大抱負。
I bet my hands（我用這雙手打賭）：
對於一位鋼琴家與創作者來說，手是最珍貴的工具。
